A number of courses have been accredited as satisfying the requirements of the diploma or just Part 1 (the diploma contains two parts). Students who succesfully complete a course accredited for both parts thus automatically become chartered as counselling psychologists. However, the number of such courses, particularly outside the London region, is still limited and many trainees thus choose to proceed along an independent route. Where a course is only accredited against Part 1, students who take such a course can then take Part 2 via the independent route.
