Several aromatic photochromic units can be incorporated into macromolecules by appropriate copolymerization or such active molecules may even only be dissolved in a transparent polymeric matrix without chemical bonding. The formation of color under the influence of light is rapid, but, for the time being, the rate of discoloration in the dark is still slow and the addition or incorporation of active color quenchers appears to be necessary to reach systems with practical applicability.
