Nibb¯ana can be seen not as the attainment of a quasi ‘mystical’ state, but the quelling of behavior patterns based on greed, aversion, and confusion. The Buddha refers to these three powerful forces as ‘three fires’ (Gombrich, 2009). Nibb¯ana is considered to be the ‘going out’ or extinguishing of these fires that determine so much of human behavior in ordinary life. Glenn Wallis (2007) refers to nibb¯ana as the ability to ‘unbind’ from patterns of destructive behavior and, rather than likening it to the attainment of a state of being, sees it as a skill that practitioners can become increasingly better at the more that they engage with the path.

As such, it has some parallels with the Western European philosophy known as phenomenology and those therapeutic approaches that have derived from it. ’ This phenomenological method involved increasingly fine layers of investigation, which refined the quality of perception by systematically eliminating the strata of common assumption and personal association. Buddhist methods of spiritual development, practised through meditation, and also through mindfulness in daily life, similarly seek to set aside the attachment-building processes of attraction and aversion, and to perceive phenomena as they exist, devoid of self-contamination.
